I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of Mr May's confidential despatches of the 6th and 10th of July with regard to the cases of Inspectors Brett and Reidie of the Sanitary Department.

It appears that the banking accounts of both these officers show that they have paid in large sums of money and that they are unable to account satisfactorily from what source the money was obtained. Mr May, therefore, suggests that I should recommend the Crown to dispense with their services, although since it is not possible to frame definite charges for the consideration of the Executive Council.

3. I regret that I am unable to adopt this suggestion. I cannot regard a mere suspicion as sufficient ground for dismissal and, unless some specific charge can be brought forward, I can take no steps in the matter for removing these officers from the public service.
